How to choose a dentist in Belfast

To find a dentist in Belfast, check that the dentist is on the General Dental Council register, decide between Health Service and private care, and phone practices directly to ask about new patients. In Northern Ireland, HSC says it holds no list of practices accepting new Health Service patients.
Choosing a dentist in Belfast is mostly a matter of practical checks: is the dentist registered, is the practice taking patients, and are you clear about Health Service or private care. This guide uses the processes described by nidirect, HSC Northern Ireland and the General Dental Council. It does not rank or recommend any practice.
What to check before you register
Start with the dentist’s registration. Every dentist should appear on the General Dental Council register, which the GDC says is free and open to anyone to search. You can search by name, town or a combination, or by registration number. The guide to the GDC register walks through the steps.
The register shows a person’s status, registration number, registrant type, date of first registration, current registration period and qualifications. The GDC says it does not show telephone numbers, whether someone is practising or retired, whether they work privately or for the NHS, or where they work. A register entry is therefore a starting check, not a full picture of a practice.
Next, find out whether the practice is taking patients. nidirect says to register as a Health Service patient you contact dental practices in your area directly, and that not all have the capacity to take on new patients, so you may have to join a waiting list or look elsewhere. HSC Northern Ireland says access to Health Service dentistry is currently very difficult, particularly for unregistered patients. It says it does not keep a current list of practices accepting new patients.
HSC Northern Ireland points to two tools: the HSC service finder, which lets you find practices by distance from your address, and a downloadable Find a Dentist spreadsheet of practices across Northern Ireland. Both list practices, not availability, so you still have to phone.
NHS (Health Service) or private
In Northern Ireland the public service is called the Health Service, delivered by HSC. nidirect says you can use a Health Service dentist with a set scale of charges, or pay a private dentist. Which one you want affects which practices to approach, so ask the question at the first call.
nidirect says that once you register as a Health Service patient you stay on that dentist’s list for 24 months, and that the period is extended if you return for an examination or treatment within it, according to nidirect, checked 6 October 2026. It lists the Health Service treatments dentists provide, including examinations, x-rays, scaling, polishing, gum treatments, fillings, root canals, tooth removal, bridges, crowns and dentures.
For private treatment, nidirect says your dentist will tell you what treatment you need and what the exact cost will be. The General Dental Council says you can ask to see a price list if one is not on display. Ask which route applies to the treatment you want. The Health Service dentist listings show practices that mention Health Service care, and the practice confirms what applies to you.
If you have an urgent problem and no dentist, HSC Northern Ireland describes the Dental Access Scheme for unregistered patients on weekdays, and Emergency Dental Clinics at weekends and bank holidays. See the emergency dentist listings for practices that mention urgent appointments.
Reading Google ratings with care
A Google rating is an average of public star ratings left by users. It tells you how some patients felt about their experience, but none of the official sources opened for this guide treat it as evidence of clinical quality, and this guide does not either.
A few cautions are common sense, not statistics. A rating does not say who treated the reviewer or what the treatment was. A small number of reviews can move an average a lot. A rating says nothing about whether the practice is taking new patients or offers Health Service care.
Use ratings alongside checkable facts: the GDC register entry, a clearly stated fee list and a written treatment plan. Where this directory shows a Google rating, it shows what Google publishes and does not endorse it. We do not publish review text.
Questions to ask a practice
The General Dental Council suggests patients ask themselves these questions before agreeing to care:
- Is the planned treatment Health Service or private?
- Do you know the likely cost, and can you see a price list?
- Do you understand what the treatment involves, and can you have a written treatment plan?
- Has the dentist told you about other treatment options?
- Do you have all the information you need to make an informed decision?
- If an appliance such as a denture is made for you, have you been offered a copy of the statement of manufacture?
nidirect adds that dentists must explain treatment options, obtain consent, give you access to your records and allow second opinions, and that you may refuse treatment or stop if you are not satisfied.
For a first phone call, also ask whether the practice is currently registering new patients, whether it offers Health Service or private care, and how it handles urgent problems outside opening hours. For families, the children’s dentistry listings show practices that mention treating children, and the practice confirms details.
How this directory lists practices (methodology)
This directory lists practices in Belfast and the surrounding area from public information, mainly Google Maps data and the practices’ own websites. It does not verify claims, award badges or rank practices. Registration is not recorded here, which is why every guide points you to the GDC register.
The methodology page explains how listings are selected. If a listing is wrong, use the report an error page. A listing that appears here has not been checked by us, so confirm every detail with the practice.
Next step
Make a short list of practices near you, phone each one with the questions above, and check the dentist’s registration on the GDC register. Start from the Belfast dentist directory to browse practices by area or treatment.
Next step: Find a dentist in Belfast. You can also browse dentists in Belfast BT9, Belfast BT15, Lisburn or every area.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find a dentist taking new patients in Northern Ireland?
HSC Northern Ireland says it does not hold a list of practices currently accepting new Health Service patients. Contact practices in your area directly. nidirect says not all have capacity, so you may join a waiting list or look further afield. Use the HSC service finder to see practices near you.
Does the GDC register show whether a dentist is NHS or private?
No. The General Dental Council says it does not hold information on whether a person works in the NHS or private practice. The register shows status, registrant type and qualifications. Ask the practice directly whether your planned treatment is under the Health Service or private.
Can this directory tell me which dentist is right for me?
No. The directory lists practices from public information and does not rank, recommend or verify them. Use a listing as a starting point, check the dentist on the GDC register, and ask the practice the questions in this guide before you register.
What can I ask a dentist before agreeing to treatment?
The General Dental Council suggests checking whether treatment is Health Service or private, what it involves, the likely cost, whether other options exist, and whether a written treatment plan is available. nidirect adds that you can ask for a second opinion and refuse treatment.
