What veneers involve
The Oral Health Foundation describes a veneer as a thin covering fixed to the front surface of a tooth, made from porcelain or tooth-coloured composite. Fitting usually takes two visits. At the first, a small amount of enamel is removed and an impression is taken for the dental laboratory. At the second, the veneer is checked for fit and colour, then bonded with dental adhesive.
When veneers are used
The Oral Health Foundation says people have veneers for teeth that do not respond to whitening, chipped or worn teeth, small gaps between front teeth, uneven shapes or sizes, and slightly crooked-looking teeth. Veneers can last many years with proper care but may chip, crack or loosen. For a related comparison, see Lumineers compared with veneers.
Cost and availability
The NHS says veneers are generally only available privately, unless you can show a clinical need. The Oral Health Foundation says costs vary between practices and that dentists should explain options, benefits and risks first.

What are veneers made of?
The Oral Health Foundation states that veneers are made from porcelain or tooth-coloured composite filling material. A veneer is a thin covering fixed to the front surface of a tooth, in a similar way to how a false nail fits over a natural nail.
Does fitting a veneer involve removing tooth?
According to the Oral Health Foundation, checked 6 October 2026, fitting usually needs two visits. At the first, a small amount of enamel is removed to make space and an impression is taken for the laboratory. At the second, the veneer is checked and bonded on.
Are veneers available on the NHS?
The NHS states that veneers are generally only available privately, unless you can show a clinical need. The Oral Health Foundation says veneers are private treatments with costs that vary between practices, and dentists should give clear cost estimates before starting treatment.
How many Belfast-area practices list veneers?
