What dental implants involve

The NHS describes an implant as a titanium screw placed into the jaw bone to support a crown, bridge or denture. Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust says dental implants are artificial replacements for tooth roots. Treatment typically has four stages: a pre-operative assessment, possible bone grafting, implant placement, and fitting the crown, bridge or denture.

Who it may suit, and the risks

The same trust says implants suit people who do not want healthy teeth capped for a bridge, or whose dentures or bridges lack adequate support. Risks include an implant not joining properly with the bone, which is higher for smokers. Long-term care is the patient’s responsibility. The trust strongly recommends stopping smoking before treatment.

Cost and availability

According to the NHS, checked 6 October 2026, implants are usually only available privately and are expensive. Practices set their own fees. For a comparison of related options, see full-arch implant options.
