NHS (Health Service) dentistry in Belfast
Health Service dentistry in Northern Ireland is dental care provided through the HSC system. Patients register with a practice and pay a share of the cost unless they are exempt. It covers examinations, x-rays, fillings, gum treatments, extractions and specialist referrals. Cosmetic work is generally private.

What Health Service dentistry covers
Nidirect states that Health Service dentistry covers examinations, x-rays, fillings, gum treatments, tooth extractions and specialist referrals. Private dentistry offers additional treatments and cosmetic options. Your dentist must explain costs before treatment begins. Treatment charges are published each year in the Statement of Dental Remuneration.
Charges and exemptions
The Business Services Organisation says registered patients pay a share of the gross cost of treatment, up to a stated maximum. The figures on its page carry a date of 1 April 2007, so we do not quote them as current: ask your practice, or check nidirect, for the amounts that apply now. The Business Services Organisation also lists groups who pay nothing, including pregnant patients and some children and young people. Compare Health Service and private costs in NHS vs private dental charges in Northern Ireland.
Registering and waiting
HSC Northern Ireland says access to Health Service dentistry is currently very difficult, particularly for unregistered patients. You contact practices directly, and it does not hold a list of practices accepting new patients. Nidirect says that once registered, you stay on a dentist’s list for 24 months, extended if you receive treatment in that period.
Questions to ask a practice
- Are you accepting new Health Service patients, and is there a waiting list?
- Which treatments will I pay for, and how much?
- What are your arrangements for urgent problems?
