Sedation and nervous patients in Belfast

Dental sedation helps anxious patients relax during treatment. With conscious sedation the patient stays awake, and it is not a general anaesthetic. Options described in two patient leaflets from an NHS trust in England include inhalation sedation, a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen breathed through a nosepiece, and intravenous sedation given by injection into a vein.

What it involves

Dental sedation helps anxious patients accept treatment. A leaflet from Wirral Community Health and Care NHS Foundation Trust describes inhalation sedation as breathing a mixture of nitrous oxide gas and oxygen through a small nose piece, with the patient always staying awake and able to talk. It describes intravenous sedation as an injection into a vein in the back of the hand or arm. The patient stays awake but may not remember the treatment, and the trust states that conscious sedation is not a general anaesthetic.

The leaflets come from a trust in England, not Northern Ireland, and we found no Northern Ireland page on dental sedation. Practices here may work differently, so rely on your own practice’s written instructions.

Who it may suit

Sedation is an option for patients who feel anxious about dental treatment. The NHS also lists sedation as an option for wisdom tooth removal, alongside a local anaesthetic. Practical rules differ by type. For intravenous sedation, the trust states that a responsible adult escort must stay and take the patient home, and that the patient needs care afterwards. For treatments where sedation is often discussed, see extractions and wisdom teeth.

Questions to ask a practice

  • Which sedation types does the practice offer, and which would be advised for me?
  • Who gives the sedation, and what monitoring is used?
  • Do I need an escort, and what are the rules on food, drink and driving?
  • Is sedation part of Health Service care or a private extra, and what is the exact cost?
  • What happens if I cannot follow the instructions on the day?

Frequently asked questions

Will I be asleep under dental sedation?

No. Wirral Community Health and Care NHS Foundation Trust states that conscious sedation is not a general anaesthetic. With intravenous sedation you stay awake and able to talk, although you may not remember the treatment. With inhalation sedation you always stay awake. Ask the practice which type it offers.

Do I need someone with me for intravenous sedation?

Wirral Community Health and Care NHS Foundation Trust states that you must attend with a responsible adult escort, who stays on the premises and takes you home afterwards. Its leaflet also lists rules on food, alcohol and activities. Ask your practice for its own written instructions.

Can I drive after dental sedation?

Rules on driving, food, drink and alcohol depend on the type of sedation and on the practice. The two NHS trust leaflets we read are from a trust in England, not Northern Ireland, so we do not quote their timings. Ask your practice for its written instructions before the appointment and follow them.

How many Belfast-area practices list sedation?

19 listed practices show it on their own website or Google listing, most often in Belfast BT9 (4), Belfast BT4 (3), Lisburn (3). A practice may offer it without publishing it, so ask the practice.

Are the sedation practices ranked on this page?

No. The 19 practices that list sedation are shown A to Z, and each area page lists its own practices alphabetically. Ratings shown elsewhere on the site come from Google and are not a measure of clinical quality.
